ב"בלומברג" דיווחו כי מזכיר המדינה "בוחן את צעדיו" אחרי התבוסה הרפובליקנית בבחירות האמצע, ב"אינדפנדנט" הבריטי ציינו כי ישיק את קמפיין הנשיאות - תוך שהוא מרחיק את עצמו מהמלחמה באיראן: "להיות מזוהה עם הממשל רק יפגע בסיכוייו". רוביו עצמו הכחיש - וגם הבית הלבן: "הוא לוחם חסר פחד למען טראמפ"
