Uma sucessão de acidentes graves levou ao encerramento definitivo da Linha do Tua em agosto de 2008. Mesmo deixando debaixo de água 16 quilómetros de linha centenária, a construção da Barragem de Foz Tua abriu a possibilidade de voltarem a circular comboios no troço Brunheda - Mirandela. Esta contrapartida não se concretizou desde então. No dia em que se assinalam 170 anos da ferrovia em Portugal, a RTP Antena 1 recorda o caso de uma linha que se perdeu no país.
