As equipas com cães especializados destinam-se a detetar restos humanos entre os destroços, uma vez que pode haver pessoas vivas e inconscientes debaixo dos escombros. Segundo Jorge Silva, da Associação de Técnicos de Segurança e Proteção Civil, a contagem de mortos só será por isso encerrada "ao final de alguns dias, depois de as vítimas serem dadas como socorridas e estarem estáveis".
